Description

The entrance to Mechanics’ Hall was at 519 Congress Street in Portland, the location of the Maine Charitable Mechanic Association since the 1850s. The building was built 1857-9 in Italianate architecture style. Thomas J. Sparrow, architect. The MCMA was founded by a group of skilled tradesmen in 1815 and the building was purchased in order to store their library. The ground floor was rented out to commercial businesses such as Carter Brothers Jewelers and Cressey & Allen, a piano store.
