Description
Made of black silk velvet with three large ostrich feathers, this hat is an example of the early-to-mid 20th century fashion feather craze. Local specialty stores like Portland’s Owen Moore & Company sold national brands like LaRose Hats of New York, which designed this piece. This style, known as "calot," sits on the crown of the head, with the long feathers extending from back to front, over the forehead. It is associated with Lucy Cokkinias Pachios (1909-1991) of Cape Elizabeth.
