Description
Diane Hanson (b. 1948) wore this cotton-poly blend wedding dress with a detachable train when she married David Wilkinson at Bennington, Vermont on June 7, 1969. The demure, full-coverage silhouette represents a popular mid-to-late 1960s bridal trend. However, the era’s wedding fashions included a plethora of designs ranging from structured coat dresses to short, baby doll shifts and mini dresses, demonstrating a wide array of fashion tastes.
Hooks fasten the detachable train to the dress, which allowed easy removal post ceremony. Pleated ruffles provide subtle detail along the hem and sleeve edges. The functional design stands in contrast to 1950s princess style wedding gowns which relied on crinolines and tulle to create large scale, princess-inspired silhouettes.
The dress was donated by the bride to Portland's Westbrook College collection, which eventually transferred to Maine Historical Society.
