Embellished wedding dress, Matinicus Island, ca. 1892

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

On December 26, 1892, Jennie Prescott Young (1904-1996) of Matinicus Isle married Leonard Hall Rhodes. The bride's ivory or ecru color silk faille gown features elaborate puffed sleeves, known as gigot sleeves. An 1830s hallmark, the gigot sleeve style reemerged during the 1890s. A high neck collar, lace overlays, and ostrich feathers add other popular 1890s style elements. The dress likely once included a sash or belt at the waist.

Born and raised on the remote island of Matinicus, Jennie Young worked as an island schoolteacher alongside her mother Julia. Her father, Henry, ran the island’s grocery and fisherman outfitters. The groom, a Boston merchant, was originally from Rockport, Maine.
