Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Architecture & Landscape commission for Daniel F. Emery, Jr. at an unknown address, 1900. The commission is associated with John Calvin Stevens. This item is part of the Stevens Architects drawings and records collection.

Daniel F. Emery, Jr. of The Emery-Waterhouse Company, a wholesale distributor to hardware stores and lumber yards throughout the Northeast, based in Portland and founded in 1842 by Daniel F. Emery (Sr.) and Joshua W. Waterhouse. Daniel F. Emery Jr. took over the business when his father passed away in 1891.

According to "Hardlines: a history of the Emery-Waterhouse Company," when Daniel Emery wanted to escape the busyness of the city, he would "repair to the great Shingle Style cottage he'd commissioned Portland architect John Calvin Stevens to design for him in Cumberland Foreside" (p. 34).
