Wooden shoe last, ca. 1845

This wooden straight shoe last, or shoe mold, dates from between 1830 and 1860. It is a holdover from when shoes were not made for specifically a left or right foot. Around the mid-19th century, the straight last, or straight shoe, fell out of use.
