International Appalachian Trail route map, Saint Croix Lake, 1995

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Clarence "Charlie" Gilman, a former cartographer at the U.S. Geological Survey who volunteered his expertise to the development of the International Appalachian Trail (IAT) in the 1990s drew this map.

The map depicts both a previously recommended and an alternative route for the IAT through the Saint Croix Lake region. The IAT was conceived by Richard Anderson in 1993 as an extension of the Appalachian Trail north from its terminus at Katahdin into Canada. The IAT eventually expanded across the Atlantic Ocean into Western Europe and Northern Africa, with local trails following the original Pangea-era range.
