John Marshall Brown's militia dress coat, Portland, ca. 1875

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

A brevetted Civil War general, John Marshall Brown (1838-1907) served as adjutant for the famous 20th Maine Regiment, eventually commanding the 32nd Maine until he was wounded at Petersburg. Honorably discharged from service, he served in the Maine Militia for several decades after the War.

Brown’s double-breasted militia dress coat is reminiscent of a Civil War frock coat. The brass buttons are embossed with the State of Maine seal. He likely paired this coat with a set of shoulder boards also in the Maine Historical Society (MHS) collection.

Brown was an influential member of MHS, and a namesake for the organization's Alida Carroll and John Marshall Brown Library.
