Sydney Webber house after cyclone, Searsport, 1921

Contributed by Penobscot Marine Museum

Description

The “Sunday Cyclone” in Searsport on May 22, 1921 severely damaged Sidney M. Webber's colonial mansion, formerly owned by Captain Phineas Pendleton. The force of the storm moved the house eight feet on its foundation, and the interior was ruined by the shifting of the walls.

The cyclone damaged many other Searsport structures as it moved in a sweeping arc from the northwest. L.C. Havener's house, formerly the home of Phineas Pendleton Jr. and L.M. Sargent's home, across the main road from the Webber house, were next in its path, followed by the Lewis Rich home on Steamboat Avenue. The cyclone flattened the stables of Mrs. F.S. Dyer, Willard Rich, and Hiram Russell. On Main Street, the winds blew off the roof of the Sargent Block. As the storm moved out to sea, the docks at Mack's Point suffered damage estimated to run into thousands of dollars, a substantial amount of money at the time. Amazingly, there were no fatalities and only a few serious injuries during the cyclone.

In 2010 the Webber house stood on Route 1, where it housed the office of a chiropractor.
