"Camping Out, Lake St. George," Liberty, ca. 1910

Contributed by Penobscot Marine Museum

Description

These outdoors enthusiasts were enjoying boating at Marshall Shores at the southwestern end of Lake St. George (also called Georges Lake). Marshall Shores took its name from James Marshall, who traveled from Ohio to settle in the area. Marshall called the place “the most beautiful spot in one-half of America,” according to "A Brief History of the Town of Liberty," written in 1927.

In the early 2000s the area was a town park maintained for the use of Liberty residents for swimming and picnicking.
