Description
Portland's Soldiers and Sailors Memorial stands in the center of the financial and mercantile section of Portland called Monument Square. The monument was erected 1889-1891 to honor the Portland men that died in the Civil War. Monument Square was at the intersection of Congress, Middle, Federal, Free, and Elm Streets. To the right of the monument was Edwards & Walker, formerly the United States Hotel, Portland's first large inn. The Clapp Memorial Building, built in 1924, is on the corner of Congress Street and Elm Street. A Canal National Bank branch occupied the corner in the 1960s. Other businesses depicted in this Monument Square postcard were Stan's Smoke Shop, Melmar's Cut Rate Store, American District Telegraph, Leon's Barber Shop and Federal Loan and Building Association.
