Description
Christ Church in Gardiner is the oldest Episcopal Church in the State of Maine. The Episcopal Church was first organized in 1771 by Sylvester Gardiner, also the city’s name sake.
The original church was Saint Ann’s, which burned. The building in the photo dates from 1820 and was designed by Reverend Samuel Farmer Jarvis in the Gothic style.
The photo is a “cyanotype” which is why it has a blue tone. A cyanotype is a photographic printing process first introduced by Sir John Herschel in 1842, a scientist and astronomer who was trying to find a way to copy his notes. It was used in photography to produce a cheap and fast photographic image.
The cyanotype is most well known for producing low cost copies of drawings know as blueprints.
