Description

The year and one-half old Houlton Rotary club made quite a splash at the 1921 annual convention held at Poland Springs. The convention was held from September 28 through October 1, 1921.

The young Houlton club choose the Aroostook County potato to promote at their first convention. Within the dinning room stood a huge carved potato that the Houlton club had produced for the convention, the "Big Potato." The grand tuber was correct in every detail, color, and shape.

Each table had a large spud as a center piece with a balloon tied to each with "Houlton" painted in gold on the balloon. One hundred and twenty-five tubers in all weighing 165 pounds, a full barrel, were taken to the convention.

Each table had a song book provided and written by the Houlton membership especially for the convention that included the "Potato Song" as well as a clever introduction song where each member was introduced by the singing members Bill Fullerton and Bernard Archibald.

All in attendance admitted that the Houlton club far eclipsed all other presentations and proved to be a huge boost to Aroostook and Houlton.
