Description

In the 1830s, the first cross-cut gigot, also known as leg of mutton, sleeves appeared. This cream watered-silk dress features balloon puffs at the shoulders. The sleeves also have a Vandyke cuff, with applied pointed detail. By mid-decade, less voluminous gigot sleeves appeared as mid-arm puffs. By 1837, the gigot deflated to a gathered, puffed lower arm detail which lingered for a time, competing with the new 1840s straight sleeve.

1830s trends also included a bodice and gather detailing, and fuller skirts. In combination with the return of the natural waist, new emphasis was placed on the appearance of a small waist necessitating the use of lacing corsets.
