Description

Intended for day wear, this multicolored, vertical striped, wool jacket was constructed to accommodate the large skirts and bustles fashionable in the 1880s.

The back is weighted with three round metal disks that are covered with silk fabric. The jacket is embellished with a black velvet standing collar, velvet cuffs, and vertical pleats down the front opening. The sleeves are low set, and mimic a cape. The jacket is lined with a black plain weave silk.

Designs within each stripe, which appear to be "Comedy and Tragedy" masks, create an almost paisley-like pattern.
