Description

Mary A. (King) Scrimgeour's circa 1895 dress represents the pouched or "pigeon pouched" bodice style of the period.

Mary King Scrimgeour (1849-1930) moved to Lewiston from Ontario in 1885. Like her husband, Scrimgeour was an inventor. She received a U.S. patent for a radiator attachment in 1918.

Several pieces from Scrimgeour's wardrobe are in the collections of the Maine Historical Society. This lightweight two-piece dress includes a bodice and skirt in aqua blue or turquoise patterned silk, and white chiffon accents. The bodice is bloused at the front with pleats that give it fullness. The yoke has double ruching chiffon, and a chiffon piece of fabric that creates a swag. The swag is repeated at the back of the bodice. The skirt is made from nine panels and includes a short train at back. The bottom of the skirt features five horizontal bands of cream velvet.
