The L.L. Bean building, shown under construction, was located beyond the parking garage. The original Maine General hospital building was in the background.

The Bean building added more than 200,000 square feet of new space and increased the number of beds. Other new facilities in the Bean building included 17 operating rooms, two especially for open heart surgery, special care and burn units, a dialysis center, and a blood bank. A nine-story elevator tower connected the new building to the Richards Wing.
