Description
The gigot (aka leg-of-mutton) sleeve was in fashion during the 1830s, but it's form changed considerably over the course of the decade.
The brown printed cotton dress and matching cape feature a gathered, puffed lower arm detail that's quite a deflation from earlier gigot styles, which resembled balloons at the shoulder or large mid-arm puffs. This more subdued late-decade sleeve detail lingered for a time, competing with the new 1840s straight sleeve.
The bodice is also a precursor to styles in the 1840s to 1860s, when a pointed waist became an established fashion trend. The dress is associated with Leavitt family of Eastport.
