Description

Ida Hussey wore this dress when she married Joseph Davidson on May 18,1898 at Guilford. A two-piece white silk dress, it includes a bodice with a draped layer of silk chiffon at the high neck. The skirt features three tiers of attached ruffles. A label that came with the dress stated, "handmade wedding gown". However, close inspection indicates there is also a degree of machine stitching.

By the 1890s, American manufactured silk yardage was available in Maine department stores, including Peck’s in Lewiston, Libby’s in Portland, as well as at small town dry-goods stores.
