Maine General Hospital was built on the top of Bramhall Hill in the West End neighborhood. The Prom was unpaved, and there was a wire fence on either side.

The location was selected to be out in the open, true to the intentional design of allowing fresh air to circulate around and through the building. This was thought to help curb the spread of disease as were many of the interior specifications.
