Description
A gold colored silk taffeta bodice from the post-Civil War era is associated with Carrie S. Cushman, who married John T. Wood at Portland on June 23, 1868.
Thought to be part of her bridal trousseau, the piece was initially donated to the Victoria Mansion in Portland, who transferred it to Maine Historical Society in 1999.
A bridal trousseau included items a woman acquired in preparation for her forthcoming marriage. While often associated with lingerie or intimate apparel, a trousseau might include clothing worn on a honeymoon or as a newlywed.
The bodice was decorated with an applied brown and gold silk satin trim, and silk fringe. It closes at the front, with five silk crocheted buttons, and has trumpet style sleeves. It includes a shawl-style collar, also edged with knotted fringe. The piece was lined with a brown plain weave cotton. The two hook and eyes at the neck are possibly a later addition. Unfortunately, any companion skirt or bottom piece did not survive.
