Description

After initial plans to land at the Scarborough airfield were thwarted by fog, Charles Lindbergh landed Old Orchard Beach on July 24, 1927. He continued to Portland by car for several speaking engagements, and later returned to Old Orchard, where his plane the “Spirit of St. Louis” awaited him. Lindbergh was on a promotional tour following his trans-Atlantic flight, the first solo flight across the ocean.

The image of Lindbergh on the grounds of Portland Flying Service Inc. was likely taken at the Municipal Airport in Scarborough. The Scarborough airport serviced Portland before the current Portland Jetport was established.
