Sarah Tibbetts to Capt. John M. Tibbetts about sons, Westport Island, 1894

Contributed by Westport Island History Committee

Description

Sarah Tibbetts wrote to her husband, Capt. John M. Tibbetts, while he was at sea. One of their sons, Eddie, age 16, was with his father. Sarah was home on her own with their youngest son, John, and at least one of her grandsons, Charlie. Her reference to "poor Carrie", her oldest daughter, may allude to mourning for her daughter who died in September 1894.

Sarah McKown Tibbetts (1840-1910) was previously married to Joseph Boucher with whom she had 10 children. John Tibbetts and Sarah had at least one child together, John Fremont Tibbetts. Sarah and John were both from Boothbay. John's sister, Martha J. Tibbetts (1857-1945), mentioned in this letter, lived in Boothbay.
