Description
Guy Gannett was an Augusta and Portland-based newspaper mogul. He owned the "Portland Press Herald," "Portland Evening Express," and many other regional Maine newspapers.
In 1920, he bought out two Portland-based newspapers and combined them to form the "Portland Press Herald." In 1925, he bought a competitor, the "Portland Evening Express."
Gannett was a pioneer in bringing visual media, in the form of photographs and drawings, to the forefront of the newspaper industry. "The Portland Evening Express" was the paper through which this experimental method of reporting was tested.
He is pictured here with U.S. Senator Frederick Hale.
