Foam substrate rolls that came off the flame laminators to produce the Vellux blanket were sent to the range spray room for processing.
The spray room operator placed the substrate roll on a frame, unwinding it until it could be attached to the previous roll by taking the beginning end of the new roll with ending of the previous and placed them between the two heat bars on the vertrod impulse heat sealer. He then activated the vertrod, the air piston closed the heat bars together and applied heat to the substrate, laminating the ends together.
Once the rolls were sealed together, the operator activated the clutch to pull the roll at variable-speed into the J scray, (sheet metal tray shaped like the letter J) where the substrate was collected in folds before passing through the range. From the scray a pull roll that ran at the controlled speed of the range pulled the substrate through a cleaning unit, before the print roll applied the adhesive that would retain the flock to be added in the next process.
George Lamontagne is in the upper right of this photo. He worked as Range #4 Spray Room Operator and had 33 years of service with Pepperell Mills.
