Description

Pvt. Loring Marriner, born 28 Nov 1844, was photographed prior to his Civil War service, as part of Co. C, 2nd Maine Cavalry.

An inscription on the reverse of the image reads "This was taken of Loring C. Marriner before he went to war 1861. He was in Cavalry Second Maine served until the war was over 1865" Despite the inscription, Marriner did not muster into service until December 1863. The image was likely taken in the fall of 1863.

Also on the reverse, written in a different hand, reads "Born in Gardiner 1844". According to his death record, Pvt. Marriner was born in Pittsfield, where his parents (Samuel and Jane Marriner) are recorded as also having a daughter in 1847. The family moved to Brunswick, and eventually Gardiner. Pvt. Marriner was a resident of Gardiner when he enlisted in 1863. Later in life, he shortened his first name to Loren. He died in Gardiner in 1921.
