Mercy Hospital, Portland, ca. 1945

Contributed by Northern Light Mercy Hospital

Description

To better serve its growing community, Queen's Hospital transitioned into Mercy Hospital during the winter of 1942-1943, with a new, larger location at 144 State Street in Portland.

The new Mercy Hospital included expanded services with 150 beds and 36 bassinets, and was hailed as one of the most advanced of its kind in northern New England. The new expansion was formally dedicated on March 18 and 19, 1943 by Bishop McCarthy.

The additional space was soon put to use. By 1946, Mercy Hospital was operating at 92% capacity.
