Description

The title for this small booklet "Chops and Tomato Sauce" was a literary allusion to Charles Dickens' "The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club," also known as "The Pickwick Papers." In "The Pickwick Papers," Samuel Pickwick's landlady, Mrs. Bardell, sued him for breach of promise, after she mistakenly believed he proposed to her.

In chapter 34, the plaintiff's lawyer, Mr. Buzfuz, entered two letters into evidence against Mr. Pickwick, one which read "Garraway's, twelve o'clock. Dear Mrs. B - Chops and Tomata [sic] sauce. Yours, Pickwick." The lawyer went on to make assumptions about the suggestive nature of such a line.

In addition to "Chops and Tomato Sauce," this booklet included recipes for a "Cream Sauce for Croquettes and Patties", a "Bread Sauce for Game", a "Hollandaise Sauce for Fish or Cauliflower" and a "Horseradish Sauce, Hot for Beef." While the recipes were printed, the cover of the book was hand-drawn by an unrecorded artist. The reverse of the booklet included a small hand-drawn table place setting for one.
