Description
The front page of the Portland Evening Express featured this photo of the Junior Class of Americanization, Department of Public Schools on April 27, 1923. The headline proclaimed, “Portland Observing Americanization Day – Prominent Speakers at City Hall Tonight." This was one of 11 such classes formed that year for Portland school children. Mrs. Ruby B. Perry led this particular group in daily hour and a half sessions at the Boys Club, teaching English and American Ideals.
The Yankee Division Club, the National Reserve, the old Portland Cadets, the Fifth Infantry, and local National Guard companies were invited to join the Americanization Day parade. Scheduled speakers included WWI veteran Colonel Frank M. Hume, Colonel George E. Fogg, and Edward S. Anthoine from the Maine Department of the American Legion.
