Description
This covered bridge spanning the Mattawamkeag river was part of US route 2A, or what is known (as of 2018) as the Military road in Haynesville.
Due to the border dispute in the early years of statehood, a Garrison was built in Houlton known as Hancock Barracks. A road was needed to supply this garrison, along with its many troops. Road construction went on for several years by military crews and was open for travel around 1832.
Pvt. Hiram T. Smith died while this road was being built in 1828, and his gravestone is on the east side of the road in Haynesville.
The Military road was used extensively being the only route to Aroostook county until the early 1960’s when I-95 was extended north.
This bridge was replaced by an iron bridge. Route 2 was moved slightly to lessen the turn, and a modern bridge at another location is used as of 2018.
