Description

Charles F. (1847-1918) and Etta M. Elwell Achorn (1847-1919) posed in front of their home at 89 Main Street. Married in 1869 in Lowell, Massachusetts, they moved to Coopers Mills from the town of China in September 1882 when they bought this house. They did not have children.

Charles' entrepreneurial success was reflected in this large house, horses and carriages, outbuildings, and a lamp post. Not visible in this view was a windmill out back which brought water into the house and barn. When he died in 1918 the Kennebec Journal wrote in part: "He had the respect and love of the entire community. An honest, upright man. ever ready to assist those in trouble, his passing will cause profound grief to those who knew him."
