Rafael immigrated to Maine from Peru and worked as an immigration lawyer. One of only a handful of foreign-born lawyers in Maine, Peruvian Rafael Galvez understood the challenges of succeeding in a foreign land. On a professional level, he learned what perseverance it takes for immigrants to overcome barriers to reuniting with their loved ones or becoming U.S. citizens.
“That’s where my heart is—in immigration policy. It’s my passion,” he said in 2009. “It is not enough for the legal system to bring the undocumented out of the shadows of society; society itself must accept that, like most people, undocumented immigrants come to the U.S. to work hard for a better future.”
