Description
Considered a “washable uniform” this American Red Cross (A.R.C.) World War I era uniform features the innovative Hoover apron style, with a wrap-around front. It is easy to put on and allows one side to cover the other in the event of soiling. The apron belt buttons at the back. The plain white fabric and scarlet flat, pointed collar signify an A.R.C. administrative role.
Women who served during and after the war were permitted to wear washable uniforms as an alternative to the standard dress. Although, volunteers were only permitted to be in uniform when performing an official capacity. The wrap-around washable uniform became more popular in the 1920s.
