Description
Stephen Hopkins (1707-1785) was a member of the Continental Congress from Rhode Island. Initially an astronomer, Hopkins was appointed as Chief Justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court in 1751 and as governor of the colony in 1755, a position he held four times. While in the Continental Congress, he was a member of the Naval Committee, the position he held during the writing of this letter.
The letter's recipient is seemingly a shipbuilder. Signed January 6, 1776, Hopkins, along with three other men on the Congressional committee, are thanking the builders for outfitting two vessels, the Hornet and the Wasp, in Baltimore. The committee also asks the recipient to forward a "Miscarried or...intercepted" letter to a Capt. Stone, whom they appointed as Commander in Chief of the Naval Fleet of the United Colonies.
