Memorial to Meyer Davis, Jr., Miami, 1945

Contributed by Raymond H. Fogler Library

Description

Following the death of Meyer Davis, Jr., who died with his shipmates when the U.S.S. Buck was lost off the Isle of Capri on October 9, 1943, the Davis family received a photograph and letter from Mrs. Junius S. Morgan, President of the Citizens Committee for the Army and Navy, Inc., in New York.

The letter, dated March 5, 1945, informed the family that Triptych No. 251, Madonna of the Skyways, had been installed in the Chapel of the U.S. Naval Air Station in Miami, Florida. A donor, Al Paul Lefton, made the memorial possible, and had suggested the painting by Russell Speakman. They asked that it be inscribed, "In memory of a fine lad, Meyer Davis, Jr., Storekeeper, 1st class, and his Shipmates."

Meyer Davis Jr.'s mother, Hilda Emery Davis, was born in Bar Harbor, and converted to Judaism when she married Meyer Davis Sr. The family spent various summers and vacations in Maine.
