Description
Elihu Washburne was a congressman from Illinois, born and raised in Livermore. He was self-taught and well-schooled, having attended Kents Hill Seminary and Dane Law School, known now as Harvard Law School.
Washburne's brother, Algernon Sidney Washburn, lived in Boston at the time this letter was written, and was clerking at a dry goods store. Algernon was financially successful and often supported his brothers financially. Elihu Washburne was no exception, as he oftentimes discussed financial matters with his brother.
When he wrote this letter, Elihu was working for the post office in Hallowell, under postmaster Dr. Amos Nourse. Washburne, an ardent Whig also discussed the upcoming fall election.
