Description
Writing to Edward I. Bernstein (1923-2000) of Portland, Senator Margaret Chase Smith (1897-1995) described her reaction to the amount of money Robert A. G. Monks (b. 1933) of Cape Elizabeth was spending on his effort to defeat her in the June 1972 Republican primary.
Although Smith lost her Senate seat in the November election, she defeated Monks in the primary, expending $9,343.11 compared to the Monks campaign’s $375,512.11.
Two days before the primary, Bernstein served as co-chairman of a reception for Smith held by backers from Cumberland County.
