Jessie Pond, Belgrade Lakes, 1915

Contributed by Camp Runoia

Description

Jessie Pond, along with Lucy Weiser, founded Camp Runoia in 1907.

The first summer they had 9 campers and a cook and settled in on the Northeastern side of Great Pond in Belgrade Lakes. They traveled by train from New York City to Belgrade Depot and then took a carriage to North Belgrade.

By 1914 they had explored a lot of the area and finally convinced a bachelor farmer to sell his property on the Southern side of Great Pond in Belgrade Lakes. In the summer of 1915, this became the site for Camp Runoia.

Lucy Weiser designed the buildings and had local contractors build them. Jessie Pond oversaw the programs at camp and both ladies did the recruiting of campers and staff.
