Description
Andrew Peterson was a successful Monhegan fisherman from the 1880s through the early 20th century.
This photograph was taken as Andrew Peterson sculled his punt toward Fish Beach. Sculling was graceful form of rowing done while standing, using one oar from the stern of the punt or skiff.
A “punt” has two flat ends while a “skiff” has one pointed end and one flat end. Fishermen used punts and skiffs to reach their larger dories.
