Samuel Washburn on rebel attack at City Point, Virginia, 1862

Description

Samuel Washburn wrote to his brother, Congressman Elihu Washburne, while aboard the USS Galena during the Civil War. Washburn discussed the Galena's role in fighting the Confederate forces at City Point and damage to the ship.

Samuel Benjamin Washburn was born to Israel Washburn and Martha “Patty” Benjamin Washburn on January 1, 1824 in Livermore. At age 18 Samuel Washburn went to sea, and later became the master of his own vessel in 1844.

During the Civil War, Washburn was appointed Acting Master in the U.S. Navy, and an officer on the gunboat USS Galena. During the Battle of Fort Darling on May 13, 1862 he was wounded in the hip. In 1864 he took command of four vessels in the Gulf of Squadron under Admiral Farragut. Washburn received an honorable discharge from the Navy in 1865.

In 1871 Washburn returned to Livermore to take care of his aging father. Samuel Washburn died at Avon Springs, New York at age 66 on March 4, 1890.
