Description

This portrait is of James Swan Jr., the son of the wealthy Bostonians, James and Hepzipah Swan.

He married Henry Knox's youngest daughter, Caroline, and lived with her at Montpelier, the family mansion in Thomaston, until his death in 1836.

This painting has been attributed to Gilbert Stuart.
