Description
The Champlain Society, a group of Harvard University students who camped, explored, studied and socialized on Mount Desert Island during the 1880's recorded their activities in a camp log.
This logbook chronicles the members' activities in 1884. Camp Asticou served as the base-camp for much walking and hiking throughout the island. That summer, Champlain Society members witnessed the burning of the Green Mountain House on the top of what is known today as Cadillac Mountain (once named "Green Mountain.").
Other notable events for 1884 included, on August 13, "...the stormiest day in the annals of the Camp, according to the memory of the oldest inhabitant. It rained in torrents from five o’clock in the morning until eleven at night only holding up for a few minutes twice during the day."
