Lt. Orin S. Haskell, Bangor, ca. 1864

Description

Orin Shepley Haskell (1836-1910) walked from Levant to Bangor to enroll in the 1st Maine Cavalry, where he mustered in as a private in Co. A, on October 19, 1861.

Over the course of the next four years of the Civil War, Haskell was promoted from company clerk to regimental quartermaster, and then received a commission as 2nd lieutenant. He was promoted to 1st lieutenant on September 3, 1864. He mustered out with his company at Augusta on August 13, 1865.

Shortly after the war, Haskell moved to Pittsfield where he was employed by businessman Going Hathorn. Later with his son, Haskell started a local weekly newspaper. He was a charter member and first commander of the GAR Stephen Davis Post #11.
