John Millett on Pittsfield Civil War enlistment quotas, Pittsfield, 1862

Contributed by Maine State Archives

Description

While John W. Millett reported poor success in his work as Recruiting Office in his letter to Adjutant General Hodsdon, he was optimistic that this would improve.

Millett sought clarity on recruitment with a series of questions such as, whether underage men could enlist without parental approval, or could previously discharged men who are recovered from disability re-enlist. Millett also wondered whether he and his men could have their choice of regiments.

Millett enlisted in 1861 into the 2nd Maine Regiment, but was discharged due to consumption at Fort Corcoran. He wrote to Maine Adjutant General John Hodsdon about whether a former soldier could re-enlist after a discharge for medical reasons.

On October 16, 1862, three months after he wrote this letter to Hodsdon, he re-enlisted, joining Co. C of the 24th Maine Regiment as a sergeant.

While aboard the ship Lizzie Southard in New York Harbor, which was bound for Fortress Monroe, Virginia and onto New Orleans, Millett was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant.
