Description
In his December 21, 1863 letter, recruiting officer C.A. Farwell reports enlisting only one soldier from Pittsfield in the prior week for the town's quota under the general call for 300,000 men to serve during the Civil War. The single enlistee, Abel P. Buker, received $250 for his enrollment in the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery Regiment.
Little is known of either of these men, other than C. A. Farwell was the first lawyer to locate permanently in Pittsfield, and Abel Buker lost his nearly 3 year old son Albert F. the year prior to his enlistment to serve in the war.
