Contributed by Westport Island History Committee

Featured speaker State Senator Edward B. Denny Jr. addressed those who turned out to celebrate the opening of the causeway to Westport Island.

This view is from from the Wiscasset side of the new roadway looking towards the island. Newspapers reported that 400-500 people participated in this celebration.

Sen. Denny worked with Westport advocates for the causeway and championed the authorization of a Westport-Wiscasset Bridge Commission in the Maine Legislature to build a causeway with a self-financing toll between the two towns. The Governor appointed Denny as Chairman of a five-man Commission with representatives from Westport and Wiscasset.
