Edward Denny at causeway opening, Westport Island, 1950

Contributed by Westport Island History Committee

Description

State Senator Edward B. Denny Jr. became interested in efforts by Westport Island residents who called themselves the Westport Improvement Association who were investigating the possibility of a state-financed bridge to the Island.

Denny later championed the authorization of a Westport-Wiscasset Bridge Commission in the Maine Legislature to build a causeway with a toll between the two towns for $300,000. The Governor appointed Denny as Chairman of the five-man Commission, along with Edwin Cromwell and John Swanton from Wiscasset and Dr. Charles DiPerri (and later Brewster Doggett) and Harry Mosher from Wiscasset.

In recognition of his important role in the realization of the causeway, Denny was a featured speaker at the dedication ceremony and official opening of the Westport Causeway on June 25, 1950. His wife, Inez (right), looked on.
