Causeway "Dedication parade," Westport Island, 1950

Contributed by Westport Island History Committee

Description

The Dunlap Commandery Band of Bath (now the Bath Municipal Band) leads a parade of vehicles and pedestrians across the approximately 575-foot Westport Causeway immediately after the dedication ceremony.

Beginning on the Wiscasset side, paraders headed to Westport where the Island's toll house marked the entry to the Island. The 55 cent toll went to fund a bond and interest that financed the causeway, insurance, and the toll collector's salary.

W.H. Hinman Incorporated, the contractors for the causeway, built a new road about a mile long to join the road leading to Westport to the part of the bay chosen for the causeway crossing. Contractors worked through swamp land, tidal wetland, and ledge. They blasted hundreds of tons of rock to build the road from Wiscasset to Westport, creating their own fill for the causeway.

This feat of engineering allowed Westport islanders to abandon the wait for the two-car ferry and allowed them to drive on and off the island at will.
