Description
Caroline Ann Washburn Holmes (1833-1920), the youngest daughter of Israel and Martha Washburn of Livermore, was known as "Callie."
She met Freeland S. Holmes of Foxcroft while in Orono visiting her brother Israel Washburn. She and Freeland Holmes married in the parlor of her family home in 1857, and settled in Foxcroft.
When the Civil War started, Freeland Holmes enlisted as a surgeon for the 6th Maine Volunteers. He died in a camp near Germantown, Virginia, in 1863.
Left a widow at the age of 30 with two small children, she moved Minnesota to be near her younger brother, William Drew Washburn. She and her two children, Fanny and Frank, spent the next 50 years in Minneapolis. Caroline Holmes did not remarry.
