Samuel Washburn describes "USS Galena," Connecticut, 1862

Samuel Benjamin Washburn (1824-1890), wrote his brother, Illinois Congressman Elihu Washburne, describing the construction and launching of the ironclad gunboat, the USS Galena.

Samuel Washburn was wounded when the USS Galena sustained fire during the Civil War Battle of Drewy's Bluff (Battle of Fort Darling) near Richmond, Virginia.
